How to Master the Post-Interview Thank You Note

A job interview is a two-way street. It’s an opportunity for you to learn about the company and the role, and it’s also an opportunity for the company to learn more about you. At the end of a successful interview, both parties should walk away feeling like it was a good use of their time. The interview process doesn’t end when the handshake does, though. In order to leave a lasting impression, you should always send a thank you note after your interview.

Not only is a thank you note good manners, but it’s also an opportunity to reiterate your interest in the role and reaffirm your qualifications. Plus, it shows that you are attentive to detail and willing to go the extra mile. With so many benefits, there’s no reason not to take the time to write a post-interview thank you note. Here’s everything you need to know about how to write one.

What to Include in Your Job Interview Thank You Note
First and foremost, your thank you note should be addressed to the person who interviewed you. In addition to thanking them for their time, make sure to mention something specific that you enjoyed about the conversation. For example, “I enjoyed hearing about your experience with the company and how it has grown over the years.” This will help them remember who you are and why they liked you.

Next, touch on why you are qualified for the role and interested in working at the company. You can say something like, “After our conversation, I am even more certain that this is the right role for me.” or “I am especially excited about X project that we discussed.” This is your chance to score some major points by showing that you were paying attention during the interview and that you are genuinely interested in the role and company.

Finally, end your note by restating your appreciation for their time and offering any additional information they may need from you. You might say something like, “I look forward to hearing from you soon” or “Please let me know if there is anything else I can provide.”

While a thank you note may seem like a small thing, it can really make a big impression on your potential employer. By taking the time to write one, you can show that you are grateful for their time, reaffirm your qualifications, express your interest in the role, and solidify yourself as a top contender for the job. So don’t forget to send a thank you note after your next interview—it just might be what lands you the job!
